Nicolette R. Contella, M.A. CCC-SLP

From a young age, Nicolette Rose Contella knew she wanted to make a difference in people's lives through communication and connection. Today, as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) based in Belmar, NJ, she helps children and adults find their voices, improve their speech, and develop stronger communication skills.

Her journey in speech-language pathology began at the University of Maryland, where she earned both her Bachelor and Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology. During her time there, she not only excelled academically but also took on leadership roles, contributing to faculty search committees and conducting research on transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) for individuals experiencing prolonged post-concussion symptoms.

Nicolette’s dedication to her field has been recognized on a national level. In 2023, she received the ASHA Distinguished Early Career Professional Award, an honor given to professionals making a significant impact early in their careers. A year later, in 2024, she earned the ASHA ACE Award for completing over 70 hours of continuing education, reflecting her commitment to lifelong learning.

A Deep Expertise in Speech, Language, and Feeding Therapy

With advanced training in motor speech disorders, oral motor therapy, and pediatric feeding, Nicolette brings a specialized skill set to her practice. She is trained in PROMPT and Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cueing (DTTC) for motor speech disorders and has completed courses in Oral Placement Therapy, Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, and Lactation Consulting to better support feeding and swallowing challenges.

Her expertise extends to literacy and phonics, where she integrates the Orton-Gillingham approach into therapy to help struggling readers and writers. She also works with individuals facing voice disorders, utilizing Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT LOUD) to improve vocal function and clarity.

Additionally, Nicolette has a strong background in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), working with children and adults to find the right communication devices and strategies. She is proficient in PRC (TouchChat, LAMP), Tobii Dynavox, GoTalk, and Lingraphica programs, ensuring that every individual has access to functional and effective communication tools.

Making an Impact in Schools & Beyond

Currently, Nicolette serves as a school-based SLP in Old Bridge Public Schools, where she designs individualized education programs (IEPs), collaborates with teachers and therapists, and helps students overcome communication barriers. She understands that speech therapy goes beyond the speech room—it’s about building confidence, independence, and lifelong skills.

Beyond the classroom, she is deeply involved in the community. In June 2023, she launched AAC On The Beach, a first-of-its-kind initiative that trains lifeguards, beach staff, and first responders in AAC strategies, ensuring that individuals with complex communication needs can safely navigate beach environments.

Nicolette also leads the Belmar Junior Lifeguard Program, mentoring and training the next generation of lifeguards. Her passion for both communication and leadership extends to Grazie Mille Co., where she supports small business owners through digital marketing while incorporating her expertise in speech-language pathology.

A Passion for Communication & Empowerment

For Nicolette, speech therapy is more than a profession—it’s a calling. She believes that communication is at the heart of human connection, and her mission is to help every individual find their voice, express themselves with confidence, and participate fully in the world around them.

Whether she’s working with a child on their first words, helping a stroke survivor regain speech, or empowering nonverbal individuals with AAC, her approach is always personalized, compassionate, and evidence-based.

If you're looking for a dedicated speech-language pathologist who is passionate about helping individuals achieve their communication goals, Nicolette is here to support you.
